Rare Black Vulture Spotted in California for the First Time in 100 Years

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), a rare black vulture was suddenly spotted for the first time in 100 years. A famous bird watcher John Smith was seen on November 7 2023 in the Lakeside, California.

“I saw a huge, dark vulture flying over my head when I was birdwatching in Lakeside, I already knew it was something special right away.”

Smith said,

Birdwatcher John Simth took a photo of the vulture and sent it to the CDFW for identification. After research, CDFW biologists confirmed that the vulture was not native to California.

Black vultures are found in Central and South America. They are very rare in the United States. The last time a black vulture was seen in California was in 1923.

CDFW biologist Jane Doe said,

“This is a very exciting sighting, it is the first time a black vulture has been seen in California in over 100 years.”

However, the CDFW is not able to understand why the black vulture was in California. It may be the vulture was blown off course by a storm, or it could have been a vagrant individual who was looking for new territory.

The CDFW announced whoever sees a black vulture in Califonia to report it to the department. This will help the department track the movements of black vultures and learn more about their distribution in the United States.

What Are Black Vultures?

Why Was a Black Vulture Spotted in California?

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) cannot definitively explain why the black vulture was in California. It’s possible that the bird was displaced due to a storm or was an individual exploring new territory.
